Seve Ballesteros

Severiano Ballesteros was born at Pedreña, Cantabria, on 9 April 1957. The fishing village possessed an exceptional golfing tradition. He learned with a three-iron given by his brother Manuel and, because he could not freely use the local course, invented a remarkable variety of shots on the beach and sometimes played secretly at night. That upbringing formed one of golf’s most imaginative players. Professional before the age of seventeen, Seve won ninety-three tournaments, including three Open Championships and two Masters. Charisma, aggression and extraordinary recovery play transformed the position of European golf. He played in nine Ryder Cups and captained Europe to victory at Valderrama in 1997. His role in opening the team to continental players was fundamental. Ballesteros also developed a design practice. Novo Sancti Petri, Oliva Nova, Los Arqueros, Pont Royal, Izki, Royal Óbidos and The Shire London are among his main associations. His courses often seek spectacular holes, clearly visible risk and opportunities for inventive shots. Specialist architects and engineers translated that player’s vision into detailed plans and construction. Many projects belonged to Spanish or European resorts and contributed to golf tourism. The Seve name carried major international value. Quality and difficulty vary according to site, but the finest courses possess personality and strong visual memory. A brain tumour was diagnosed in 2008, and he died at home in Pedreña on 7 May 2011. His architectural legacy is secondary to his sporting legend but remains significant. He helped spread a European design attitude that was more attacking, emotional and accessible to the public. Attribution should nevertheless recognise the technical teams that converted his ideas into built form.
