Tain Golf Club

Tain is a par 70 of 6,404 yards or about 5,856 metres, originally laid out by Old Tom Morris beside the River Tain with views toward the Dornoch Firth. Links turf, heathland, burns, natural contours and rich wildlife create an authentic Highland championship course.

Local people had long played on the Tain links when golfers secured land and invited Old Tom Morris in 1889. He judged that only fifteen good holes could be accommodated. The course therefore opened with fifteen holes in 1890 as St Duthus Golf Club. Further land enabled completion of eighteen holes and the name became Tain Golf Club. A clubhouse was established in 1911 and rebuilt in 1998. The property lies near the River Tain with views of the Dornoch Firth, hills and mountains. Open sandy sectors alternate with heather and more sheltered ground. Otters, deer, pine martens, herons and birds of prey strengthen the sense of a living landscape. Burns and ditches follow natural folds rather than artificial lines.

According to the club, holes two, three, four, six, nine, ten, fourteen and fifteen retain wholly or partly the substance of Old Tom’s work. The design uses found contours, semi-blind approaches and greens beyond crests. Eleven descends toward the Firth and asks for a second shot over pronounced hillocks. The change between links and heathland sustains variety. The championship course is 6,404 yards at par 70. The first follows a road and has a partly blind second shot. Surfaces run in summer, while ground near the river and hollows may be softer. Holes eight and nine form a particularly admired sequence, and the finish returns to the clubhouse through length and defended targets.

A statue of Old Tom Morris watches the first tee and establishes the club’s identity. Clubhouse, bar, professional shop and visitor welcome provide direct Highland hospitality. The round is less tourist-driven than Royal Dornoch but shares the regional landscape. Tain fits naturally into passes and trips with Golspie, Brora and Dornoch.
