Crail Golfing Society

Balcomie Links is Crail Golfing Society’s historic course, a par 69 of about 5,365 metres designed by Old Tom Morris. Opened with nine holes in 1895 and extended to eighteen in 1900, it follows bays, rocks and low cliffs around Fife Ness in one of Scotland’s most maritime settings.

Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786 but played on several grounds around the village. In 1895 the society asked Old Tom Morris to inspect Balcomie Farm. He praised its sandy turf and stated that no better ground existed in Scotland for nine holes. The course opened that year and Morris supervised the extension to eighteen in 1900. Its structure remains strongly connected to his work. Balcomie lies at the eastern end of Fife facing the North Sea and Isle of May. Holes pass beaches, rocks, Constantine’s Cave and Fife Ness. The landscape is more broken and intimate than St Andrews’ broad plains. Wind direction changes with each bay, and visual depth across water is frequently deceptive.

Old Tom used the coastline as the principal strategic element. Several tees offer a diagonal carry over beach or rocks while retaining a safer route. Greens are compact, often slightly raised and protected by pot bunkers. The par-three fourth toward the sea and coastal fifth create drama without excessive length. The modern card is about 5,867 yards, or 5,365 metres, at par 69. Short firm fairways run strongly, while rocky ground and side slopes create uncertain bounces. Coastal rough is generally playable outside gorse. Small greens reduce margin and make wind more important than raw distance.

Crail offers a historic golfing-society experience with a modern clubhouse overlooking both courses. Visitors receive organised access, practice, short-game areas and dining with views. Balcomie is an easy walk despite modest elevation and combines with Craighead for a highly contrasting thirty-six-hole day.
