Stanley Thompson

Stanley Thompson was born in Toronto to a family of Scottish origin and learned golf as a caddie and player. After attending Ontario Agricultural College and serving during the First World War, he worked in construction and maintenance before entering private practice in the early 1920s. Jasper Park Lodge and Banff Springs revealed an extraordinary ability to translate immense landscapes into golf without allowing scenery to overwhelm strategy. He became Canada’s national architect and earned the nickname “Toronto Terror,” reflecting his energy, charisma and sometimes unpredictable personality.
