Rees Jones

Rees Jones was born in Montclair, New Jersey, on 16 September 1941. The younger son of Robert Trent Jones Sr., he grew up travelling to courses and working summers in the family practice. He competed as a junior, in college and during military service. After Yale and further study, he formally joined his father’s firm in 1964. This training provided direct knowledge of post-war championship architecture and of managing an international design organisation. Jones founded his own Montclair practice in 1974. Original works include Atlantic Golf Club, Ocean Forest, Nantucket, Cascata and Danzante Bay. His greatest fame, however, came through renovations of major-championship venues. Bethpage Black, Torrey Pines South, Congressional, Baltusrol, East Lake and other courses received his work before U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, Ryder Cups and comparable events. The nickname “Open Doctor” summarises that speciality. Jones analyses landing areas for elite players, relocates or rebuilds bunkers, adjusts tees and modifies greens so strategy remains relevant at modern distances. He generally seeks visible difficulty, strong lines and clear distinction between good position and error. The result can be severe, but it also makes championship strategy legible to spectators and television viewers. Jones frequently cites New Jersey’s Golden Age architecture and respect for original character. In practice each renovation must balance restoration, club expectations, tournament requirements and equipment change. Associates including Greg Muirhead and Bryce Swanson play important roles in that translation. A living and active architect, Jones was inducted into the New Jersey Golf Hall of Fame in 2026. His legacy lies in professionalising the preparation of major venues and in architecture where strategic legibility remains central. He demonstrated that renovation can be a complete act of design, although any profile should distinguish carefully between preservation of inheritance and creation of a contemporary championship test.
