José María Olazábal

Espagnole · Champion-concepteur européen et architecture durable de resorts · 1966

José María Olazábal was born at Hondarribia in the Spanish Basque Country on 5 February 1966, into a family connected with Real Golf Club de San Sebastián. He took up the game at four and completed an unprecedented amateur sequence by winning the British Boys’, Youths’ and Amateur championships. Turning professional in 1985, he won on the European Tour the following year. He captured the Masters in 1994 and 1999 and formed with Seve Ballesteros the most celebrated partnership in Ryder Cup history. Severe foot pain threatened his career during the mid-1990s, but he returned to the highest level. The experience reinforced patience, discipline and respect for collective work. He founded a design activity with Sergio Gómez and later developed Olazabal Design with Matthias Nemes and a team of architects, agronomists and construction managers. The firm has participated in more than twenty opened courses. Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, Mission Hills’ Olazábal Course, Education City and Costa Navarino’s Olympic Course are among major projects. The latter occupies a plateau above the Ionian Sea and combines resort spectacle with attention to views, wind and Mediterranean vegetation. Olazábal contributes a champion’s judgement, especially concerning approach play, hole locations and the legibility of risk. The technical team converts those intentions into routing, irrigation, earthworks and environmental strategy. The practice emphasises passion, integrity and respect for place, with increasing attention to water and sustainability. A living architect and World Golf Hall of Fame member, Olazábal remains active as adviser, captain and European golf figure. His work represents a mature form of signature architecture: the champion’s name remains important but is supported by a stable and identifiable professional team. His architectural legacy therefore continues to evolve.
