Woodhall Spa Hotchkin — deep bunkers and Lincolnshire heath under Colt’s influence

The course traverses sandy heathland in Lincolnshire, featuring pines, heather, firm ground, and gently undulating terrain.

The club was founded at the end of the 19th century. Harry Vardon designed an initial course, then Harry Colt extensively remodelled it in the 1920s. S. V. Hotchkin, the owner of the land, subsequently made numerous adjustments.

The Hotchkin is renowned for its exceptionally deep bunkers and often slightly elevated greens. Colt prioritizes width, angles, and deceptive sightlines over mere lateral punishment.

The course is firm, fast, and demanding around the greens. While the bunkers create a dramatic impression, the true challenge lies in strategic placement.

Woodhall Spa is the headquarters of England Golf and offers a historic club experience with two courses, an academy, and nearby accommodation.
