At a glance
Wimereux is the oldest golf club on the Opal Coast and the region’s only authentic Scottish-style links, facing the sea and English cliffs.
History
The club began in 1901 on the former Aubengue racecourse and quickly became a permanent 18-hole course. Between the wars, Majors Campbell and Hutchinson rebuilt a championship layout. Destroyed during the Second World War by fortifications, railways and bombing, the ground was reconstructed in the 1950s by M. Lévrier and fully reopened in 1959. The course lies within the Grand Site des Deux Caps between dunes, sea and Boulonnais countryside. In clear weather, Dover’s white cliffs appear across the Channel. Sandy soil, gorse, heather and wind create genuine maritime character.
Architecture
The routing combines nine holes towards the sea and nine towards the countryside. Fairways appear broad but are edged by severe rough. Greens are firm and exposed. Military remains and natural movement create architecture impossible to manufacture. The course was extended to approximately 6,361 metres and plays to par 72. Firmness and wind can make holes extremely long or unexpectedly reachable. Low ball flight and ground play are essential.
Club experience
Wimereux welcomes visitors and national or international competition. Restaurant, seminar facilities, practice and proximity to Boulogne, Calais and Belgium strengthen its Opal Coast appeal. 18 holes; par 72; approximately 6,361 metres; club created in 1901; authentic links; rebuilt after the war; Dover views.
