West Kilbride Golf Club

West Kilbride Links is a par 71 of about 6,523 yards or 5,964 metres on the Firth of Clyde shoreline at Seamill. Founded in 1893 after Old Tom Morris inspected the land, it offers direct coastal golf shaped by wind, firm fairways, gorse and open views toward Arran.

The local community formed the club in March 1893 and asked Old Tom Morris to assess the available ground. His favourable opinion supported the project. Like many Scottish links, West Kilbride then evolved through members, professionals and greenkeepers rather than a single complete reconstruction. The site retains traces of coastal industry, including buildings associated with former salt workings. The property follows the coast between Seamill and Portencross. Arran, the Firth of Clyde and Ayrshire hills accompany much of the round. Sandy ground drains rapidly, while burns and a flooded former quarry introduce fresh water immediately beside the sea. Prevailing wind reaches the land without obstruction and strongly changes north-south holes.

Several tees appear open, yet coast boundaries, ditches, gorse and bunkers tighten preferred lines. Holes near the salt pans and quarry provide distinctive landmarks. Greens generally permit ground approaches, essential on an exposed coast, and bunkers tend to defend entry angles rather than simply the fronts. At about 6,523 yards, West Kilbride uses the full bag. Firm fairways can add significant run in one direction and make the ball difficult to stop in another. Coastal rough and gorse become severe in summer. The quarry between seven and eight forms a major water feature, containing fresh water despite its proximity to the shore.
