Vidago Palace — Mackenzie Ross’s legacy extended in northern Portugal’s spa country

The course is nestled in a wooded valley in northern Portugal, surrounded by chestnut trees, pines, natural hot springs, and rolling hills close to the Spanish border.

The initial nine-hole course was designed in 1936 by Philip Mackenzie Ross within the grounds of Vidago Palace. Cameron & Powell subsequently expanded the course to eighteen holes and rebuilt it to USGA standards, with its reopening occurring in 2010.

The original holes retain a classic parkland character, whereas the extension makes greater use of the undulating terrain, natural streams, and expansive green complexes.

This is a hilly, tranquil course, offering a distinct contrast to Portugal's coastal golf. The unique soil and cooler climate contribute to an almost continental ambiance.

Belle Époque hotel, thermal spa, gastronomy and forest setting complete the experience.
