De Pan — Harry Colt’s great wooded heathland, regularly ranked among the world’s best

De Pan traverses a wooded terrain in the province of Utrecht, consisting of sand, pine trees, oaks, inland dunes, and extensive areas of heather. The undulations are more pronounced than the general image of the Netherlands might suggest.

The club was founded in 1894 as the Doornsche Golf Club. It moved to its current site in Bosch en Duin in the late 1920s and was renamed Utrechtse Golfclub De Pan. Harry Colt designed the first nine holes, which opened in 1929, and then completed the full eighteen-hole course in 1932.

Colt utilized fairways that widen and narrow according to their lines, bunkers placed on diagonal edges, and greens that are often slightly elevated. The holes appear natural, yet every tree, slope, and green approach influences the preceding shot.

The course is compact, varied, and very pleasant to walk. Elevated tees, valleys, and heather areas create a succession of highly individualized holes without any break in style.

De Pan is a historic private club, renowned for its tranquility and meticulous upkeep. It welcomes visitors under certain conditions and remains strongly associated with the Colt tradition.

The Round selects it as one of the great heathland masterpieces outside the United Kingdom and a course where every decision remains legible nearly a century after its creation.
