Ailsa Course — Turnberry’s coastal theatre rebuilt around the lighthouse and cliffs

The course occupies Turnberry Point, located on the Ayrshire coast, facing Ailsa Craig. The lighthouse, ruins associated with Robert the Bruce, cliffs, and beaches endow the site with exceptional visual power.

Golf at Turnberry emerged at the end of the 19th century, spurred by railway development spearheaded by Lord Ailsa. The course and hotel opened in the early 20th century, were significantly impacted by both World Wars, and Mackenzie Ross subsequently rebuilt the Ailsa course after 1945. Martin Ebert later led a major redesign in the 21st century.

Modern architecture has moved several greens and tees closer to the sea, transformed some par 4s into par 5s or vice versa, and utilizes the coastal topography to create numerous diagonal lines. The course has become more visually open but also more strategic.

The sequence of holes around the lighthouse forms the emotional heart of the course.

The experience is that of a historic luxury resort with caddies, practice facilities and carefully presented heritage.
