Torwoodlee Golf Club

Torwoodlee Golf Course is a par 69 of 6,021 yards or about 5,506 metres around the River Gala, the Waverley railway and hills north of Galashiels. Historic holes associated with Willie Park Jr combine with a hilly 1995 expansion, creating a clear change from valley to high ground and back.

The club developed in the late nineteenth century on Torwoodlee land with an early design associated with champion and architect Willie Park Jr. River-side and estate holes formed the core for many decades. Approaching the centenary, the club undertook major change and opened ten new holes in 1995. The expansion climbed to higher ground, adding length, views and doglegs. The closing five return to older terrain, leaving the club’s history readable in the routing. The first three follow the River Gala on relatively low ground. The Waverley railway also borders the site. From four the course climbs through more rolling and wooded land. Six opens a Bowland view, while thirteen overlooks Buckholm and surrounding hills. Slopes change distance and lies, hollows retain moisture and wind becomes more influential on high points.

Torwoodlee joins two scales. Older valley holes are compact and depend on river, trees and accuracy. The 1995 section uses elevated tees, doglegs and longer views. Eight and thirteen share a double green, a rare feature adding visual depth. The downhill sixth, Bowland View, and long dogleg thirteenth, Buckholm View, illustrate the modern section. The white card is 6,021 yards at par 69, rating 69. 4 and slope 127. Yardage is modest, but central climbs add weight. Valley fairways can be softer and high ground firmer. Trees, slopes and rough narrow recovery options. Greens differ slightly by construction era, requiring adjustment in approach depth and reading.

Torwoodlee is a visitor-friendly members’ club with clubhouse, dining, professional services and booking. Galashiels and the Borders Railway provide convenient access. The walk is varied and physical without becoming mountainous. Old and new holes produce a clear narrative, while plateau views distinguish it from flatter Kelso or Duns.
