Le Riou — Terre Blanche’s private panoramic course, shorter but more tactical
Geography & setting
The course climbs to the higher parts of the estate, offering expansive panoramas towards the perched villages and the hills of the Var. Pines, maquis, and elevation changes give each hole a distinct setting.
History
Le Riou is the second course designed by Dave Thomas at Terre Blanche. It is reserved for members, their guests, and hotel residents. Shorter than Le Château, it is conceived as a more intimate and technical layout, used annually for the Terre Blanche Ladies Open.
Architecture
Thomas makes greater use of elevation changes, sloping fairways, and exposed greens here than on Le Château. Its reduced length does not imply ease: ball positioning and mastery of the slopes are constantly put to the test.
The course in detail
Le Riou measures approximately 6,005 meters. The holes alternate between elevated tees, doglegs, and approaches to greens defended by the terrain. The views are more open, but the wind is also more prevalent.
Club experience
The more restricted access gives the course a private club atmosphere within the resort. However, players benefit from the same training, dining, and wellness facilities as on Le Château.
Why play this course
The Round selects it for the contrast it provides: a shorter, more confidential, and often more subtle course than its grand championship neighbor.
