Sunningdale New — Harry Colt’s sterner, more natural and more demanding heathland

The course winds through a wilder heathland landscape, featuring heather, pine trees, inland dunes, and long vistas.

The New Course opened in 1923, designed by Harry Colt. It was created to complement the Old Course and provide a more modern, open, and strategic test of golf.

Colt incorporated deeper bunkers, more complex greens, and more diagonal lines of play. The course appears natural but demands precise positioning.

The New is generally considered more challenging than the Old. The wind, forced carries over heather, and firm greens intensify its demands.

The course shares Sunningdale’s clubhouse traditions but offers a more austere architectural experience.
