West Course

The West Course is Sundridge Park Golf Club’s second eighteen at Bromley, within one of the rare large historic golf landscapes preserved close to central London. Shorter than the East Course, it has a distinct personality: undulating parkland, mostly tree-lined fairways, occasional views of London landmarks and the River Quaggy/Kyd Brook running through the estate.

Sundridge Park Golf Club was founded in 1901. Willie Park Jr was engaged to lay out the early courses, with James Braid later associated with additions and improvements. Golf opened in the historic park around Sundridge Park Mansion, a landscape already influenced by Humphry Repton in the late eighteenth century. The courses have been reorganised over time, but the West retains the logic of a classical parkland layout integrated into natural contours.

The current official card lists 6,017 yards and par 69 from the white tees, with course rating 70. 0 and slope 134. The opening hole is a substantial par four of around 423 yards descending towards the river and immediately establishes the character of the course. Undulating ground creates many sloping approaches, while trees tighten visual lines. A strong collection of par threes further emphasises precision.

Like the East, the West belongs to the architectural heritage of Willie Park Jr and James Braid. Both courses use the same fundamental ingredients — contours, trees, bunkering and river — but with a different rhythm. The West is shorter and par 69, yet its compact sequences can become demanding when fairways firm up and greens become quick. Its quality comes from variety within historic parkland rather than dependence on extreme yardage.

The course lies only a few miles from central London while maintaining a surprisingly calm environment. The contours of the park are incorporated directly into the design. Mature trees define many fairways and the Quaggy provides natural water hazards. From selected higher points golfers can see well-known London landmarks, highlighting the unusual contrast between a country-park atmosphere and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Sundridge Park remains a thirty-six-hole club with East and West courses, covered practice, training areas, clubhouse and an active competition programme. The West provides a complementary alternative to the East and helps the club accommodate members, matches and visitors.
