Saunton East — Herbert Fowler within England’s largest dune system

The course occupies Braunton Burrows, an extensive dune system classified as an SSSI, SAC, AONB, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Saunton Golf Club was founded in May 1897. The original course was gradually extended to eighteen holes, after which Herbert Fowler redesigned it following the First World War. The current configuration of the East Course largely dates from the 1920s.

Fowler utilized sandy valleys, natural dunes, diagonal fairways, and open greens designed for running shots. The architectural design appears expansive but demands extremely precise positioning.

The East Course is long, firm, and exposed. The first hole, a lengthy par 4, immediately signals the level of difficulty, while the green complexes remain the core of the challenge.

Saunton offers two links courses, a clubhouse oriented towards visitors, and access governed by specific tee times and playing rules.
