Royal Zoute Championship — Belgium’s great coastal heathland shaped by Harry Colt and the North Sea

The club occupies approximately eighty hectares between Oud-Knokke and Le Zoute, in the immediate vicinity of the North Sea. Sandy soil, low dunes, pine trees, gorse, and coastal winds give the Championship Course a maritime heathland identity.

Golf has been played in Knokke since 1899 as part of the Bruges Golf & Sports Club. An independent club was founded in 1909. Harry Colt redesigned the course in the early 20th century, and the Royal title was granted in 1925. After the destruction of World War II, both courses were rebuilt.

Colt uses subtle angles, natural bunkers, and greens protected by the undulations of the terrain. The course is not spectacular in terms of relief, but every tee shot must prepare for a precise approach.

The terrain is relatively flat and pleasant to walk. Wind and firmness create the difficulty, while the gorse quickly reduces margins after a lateral error.

Royal Zoute is a historic club at the heart of a high-end seaside resort, with two eighteen-hole courses, a driving range, and a strong member culture.

The Round selects it as the absolute benchmark for Belgian coastal golf, for its history, its Colt architecture, and its connection to Knokke.
