Royal Troon Golf Club

Royal Troon’s Old Course is a championship par 71 stretched to about 6,591 metres and a historic member of The Open rota. Born on the Ayrshire coast in 1878 and shaped by Willie Fernie, James Braid and modern work, it is famous for the tiny Postage Stamp and a wind- and railway-bound inward half.

The club was founded in 1878 with six holes. Willie Fernie, Troon professional and 1883 Open champion, was central to extending and defining the course. James Braid strengthened parts of the layout after the First World War. More recent work, including Mackenzie & Ebert interventions, prepared the links for modern championship demands while retaining historic lines and characteristic greens. Royal Troon lies on Scotland’s west coast facing the Firth of Clyde and Arran. The outward direction often receives help from the prevailing wind before much of the return turns against it. Dunes, gorse, sand and the railway progressively compress the course. The geography creates a round that commonly becomes harder as it advances.

The design is built on contrast. Early holes appear relatively open and offer chances before the routing tightens. The eighth, Postage Stamp, is a tiny par three with a narrow green surrounded by deep bunkers. The eleventh, Railway, demands a drive between gorse and tracks. Closing holes use length, wind and bunkering to examine control under pressure. Championship setup reaches about 7,208 yards, or 6,591 metres, at par 71. Firm fairways provide long running distance, but undulations can feed a ball toward sand or rough. Greens are often harder to find than their size suggests. The very long sixth and short eighth demonstrate the extraordinary range of questions.

Royal Troon offers a tightly managed championship-club visit. Visitor days, tee availability, handicap rules, caddies and clubhouse requirements should be confirmed before booking. Open history is present without excessive staging, and clubhouse, changing facilities and lunch complete a traditional links day.

Play Troon to experience a course whose difficulty is progressively revealed. Few layouts combine a world-famous wedge hole, railway par fours and a long fight into wind so clearly. Ten Opens through 2024 enrich the heritage, but the central attraction remains architectural: every line error becomes more expensive on the way home.
