Royal St George’s — England’s great links of wild dunes and unpredictable bounces

The course is situated in the dunes of Sandwich Bay, on the Kent coast. The terrain is uneven, exposed, and subject to the winds of the English Channel.

Founded in 1887 by Laidlaw Purves, Royal St George's became the first English course to host The Open in 1894. The layout was subsequently refined by several architects, notably Harry Colt.

The architecture features undulating fairways, blind humps, deep bunkers, and greens nestled in natural folds. The course embraces a deliberate element of unpredictability.

Lies are rarely flat, and bounces can be severe. The famous Himalaya bunker on the 4th hole exemplifies its spectacular scale.

Royal St George's is a historic club, private but accessible to visitors at certain times, with a very strong Open tradition.
