Royal Lytham — a championship links without sea views, defended by more than two hundred bunkers

Royal Lytham is situated inland, behind the dunes of St Annes. The terrain is understated, the ground sandy, and the sea breeze remains ever-present despite the absence of direct sea views.

The club was founded in 1886. The eighteen-hole course was laid out by George Low Jr. at the end of the 19th century, then modified by Harry Colt and other architects before becoming a regular Open venue.

The course is famous for its density of bunkers, often arranged diagonally or grouped around landing areas. The greens are relatively small, and approach angles require great precision.

The layout appears compact but offers almost no resting holes. The first par 3 immediately sets the tone, while the final holes demand complete mastery of the game.

Royal Lytham maintains a strong championship culture and a Victorian clubhouse, with visitors admitted at specific times.
