Royal Cinque Ports — an austere, exposed Deal links famed for its closing stretch into the wind

The course unfolds across the low-lying dunes of Deal, nestled between the English Channel and the Kent countryside. While the topography is less dramatic than that of Sandwich, the wind remains a constant and influential factor.

The club was founded in 1892, initially featuring a nine-hole course. Harry Hunter began constructing the eighteen-hole layout in 1897, which opened in 1899. The club received its Royal title in 1910 and has hosted The Open in 1909 and 1920.

The architectural design favors firm fairways, deep bunkers, small, elevated greens, and numerous approach shots that can be played along the ground. The return stretch towards the clubhouse is particularly demanding when facing into the wind.

Royal Cinque Ports conveys an impression of austerity and seamless continuity. Holes 15 through 18 are renowned for forming one of the most challenging finishes in British links golf.

The historic clubhouse, dating back to the 1890s, welcomes both members and visitors alike. The club continues to host Final Qualifying for The Open and significant amateur competitions.
