Valderrama — Robert Trent Jones’s Mediterranean masterpiece and host of the 1997 Ryder Cup

Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, amidst an Andalusian landscape characterized by cork oaks, pine trees, gentle topography, and views towards the Mediterranean.

The course opened in 1975 as Las Aves, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. for Joseph McMicking. Jaime Ortiz-Patiño acquired the club in 1985, commissioned Jones to redesign it, and renamed it Valderrama. The club began hosting the Volvo Masters in 1988, followed by the 1997 Ryder Cup, the first Ryder Cup held in continental Europe.

Jones crafted narrow fairways, highly controlled angles, deep bunkers, and small, firm greens. Trees are utilized as architectural elements, not merely as decorative features.

The course is renowned for its exceptional presentation and the mental demands it places on players. The 17th, a par-5 around water, stands as one of Europe's most famous holes.
