Real Sotogrande — Robert Trent Jones’s first European course and a lasting model of Mediterranean strategy

The course is located a short distance from the Mediterranean, amidst pines, cork oaks, palm trees, and water features. The Levante or Poniente winds can significantly alter its character.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande opened in 1964. Joseph McMicking entrusted the project to Robert Trent Jones Sr. , who designed his first European course here. The club played a major role in the emergence of Sotogrande as an international destination.

Jones utilized wide fairways, diagonally placed bunkers, elevated greens, and water hazards that influence angles. The course remains welcoming from good tee shots while punishing poor choices.

The layout appears more open and relaxed than Valderrama, but approaches demand constant precision. Its quality stems from consistency rather than a small number of spectacular holes.

The historic private club retains a calm atmosphere while welcoming visitors subject to availability.
