Puerta de Hierro Arriba — a private monument of Madrid golf shaped by the British school

The course occupies undulating terrain northwest of Madrid, amidst pine and holm oak trees, and dry soils. The continental climate ensures that the playing surfaces vary significantly with the seasons.

The club was founded in 1895 and moved to Puerta de Hierro at the beginning of the 20th century. The upper course is associated with Harry Colt and the influence of Tom Simpson. It stands as one of the oldest expressions of eighteen-hole golf in mainland Spain.

The classical architecture makes use of natural slopes, with few bunkers but demanding angles and greens set on plateaus or in folds of the land. The firmness of the ground enhances the value of ground play.

The course appears relatively short by modern standards, but the elevation changes, trees, and small greens maintain a high level of difficulty.

Puerta de Hierro is one of Spain's most exclusive clubs, offering golf, polo, equestrian sports, tennis, and boasts a long-standing relationship with the Royal Family.
