Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club

Prestwick St Nicholas is a true coastal links, par 69 and 6,044 yards or about 5,527 metres, set directly beside the Firth of Clyde. Its present Grangemuir Road course opened in 1892 and combines fast fairways, deep bunkers, undulating greens and gorse in a compact but constantly wind-exposed format.

The club began on 3 November 1851 as the Prestwick Mechanics Club, with Old Tom Morris driving its formation. It adopted the St Nicholas name in 1858 and initially shared Prestwick Golf Club’s links. Two members played in the first Open Championship in 1860, and Morris won three of his four Opens while associated with the club. After earlier moves, St Nicholas opened its present clubhouse and course in 1892. The property occupies a narrow strip between town, airport, shoreline and the Firth of Clyde. The club describes it as the only course on this coast with sea visible from every hole. Arran and Ailsa Craig appear offshore. Old salt-pan buildings behind the first green and a flooded quarry between seven and eight give the landscape unusual industrial memory.

The routing relies on natural ground rather than theatrical construction. Fairways frequently parallel the shore, while directional changes present wind from different angles. Bunkers are small, deep and close to landing areas. Greens contain subtle slopes that become quick in dry conditions. The long par-four thirteenth is the principal length examination. At 6,044 yards and par 69, modest length does not guarantee a low score. Firm fairways create lateral bounce, gorse punishes offline drives and sea air continually changes effective distance. Surfaces remain generally firm and playable through the year. The quarry holes add rare inland water to a classic links setting.

St Nicholas offers a living historic club atmosphere, with a clubhouse only yards from the shore, archives, honour boards and Old Tom Morris memorabilia.
