Prestwick — the birthplace of The Open, where eccentricity remains a virtue

The course is situated on the Ayrshire coast, nestled between the town, the railway line, and the dunes of the Firth of Clyde. Its confined space accounts for its crossing holes, blind shots, and unusual shapes.

Prestwick Golf Club was founded in 1851. Old Tom Morris became its Keeper of the Green and designed the initial twelve-hole course. The first Open Championship was held here in 1860; the layout was extended to eighteen holes in 1882.

Prestwick retains historic holes such as Alps, Cardinal, and Himalayas. Large bunkers, walls, dunes, and hidden greens replace modern legibility with an architecture of discovery.

The course demands acceptance of several shots without a complete view of the target. Variety takes precedence over uniformity.
