Portsalon Golf Club

Portsalon — a historic Donegal links reawakened by Pat Ruddy above Ballymastocker Bay

The course overlooks Ballymastocker Bay on the Fanad Peninsula, in northern Donegal. The beach, Lough Swilly, the hills and the dunes create a very open and highly exposed landscape.

Portsalon Golf Club was founded in 1891 and is one of the founding members of the Golfing Union of Ireland. The original course is associated with Charles Thompson of Portrush. After several decades of evolution, the club entrusted Pat Ruddy with a major renovation in the late 1990s. The new layout opened in 2002.

Ruddy preserved the historical character of the site but created a much more directional architecture. Fairways snake between dunes and slopes, bunkers define useful areas, and several greens are set on natural platforms overlooking the bay.

The course starts near the clubhouse and then quickly reaches the dunes and the views of Ballymastocker. The second half alternates power holes, elevation changes, and approaches to exposed greens.

Portsalon remains a welcoming members’ club in a relatively remote part of Donegal, with the clubhouse overlooking the course and bay.

The Round selects it for the quality of its transformation: a historic club that has become a modern and strategic links course without losing its Donegal identity.
