Pinehurst No. 2 — Donald Ross and crowned greens in Carolina sand
Geography & setting
The course is located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, amidst pine trees, sand, wiregrass, and gently undulating terrain.
History
2 opened in 1907 and became the most personal work of Donald Ross, who lived nearby for a long time and modified it over several decades. Coore & Crenshaw restored its sandy character in 2010.
Architecture
Ross utilized wide fairways, subtle angles, and crowned greens that repel imprecise approaches. The restoration removed much of the uniform rough in favor of natural sandy areas.
The course in detail
The primary challenge lies around the greens. Slightly misdirected shots roll away into highly varied recovery areas.
