Peebles Golf Club

Peebles Golf Course is a par 70 of 6,138 yards or about 5,613 metres on the Kirklands slopes above the Tweed Valley. Elevation, high tees, burns and exposed greens give Harry Colt’s remodelled course far more strategic character than its moderate length suggests.

Peebles Golf Club was founded in 1892 and first played at Morning Hill, formally opening a course that October. The move to a more permanent Kirklands site followed in 1908. Harry Colt was invited in the 1930s, and his 1933–34 work reorganised angles, bunkering and several green sites to establish the present identity. The club also built a strong amateur tradition: A. T. Kyle won The Amateur Championship at Hoylake in 1939, and later Peebles players collected Scottish junior titles. The course climbs north of Peebles and overlooks the Tweed corridor. High points near six and fifteen reveal town and hills. Climbs, plateaux and descents alternate, with burns in lower ground. Parkland grass, rough, small heather areas and individual trees create texture. Exposure makes wind important, but slope and direction change its effect rapidly. Upper fairways run in dry weather while hollows retain moisture.

Colt turns slopes into line questions. Elevated tees often show the target, but tilted fairways move the first bounce. Bunkers occupy the sides providing the preferred approach. The short par-three seventh, Colt’s Choice, requires exact distance to an exposed green. Nine and eighteen return to the clubhouse and produce distinct loop finishes. Green depth is often limited from the wrong angle. The white course is 6,138 yards at par 70. Climbs add clubs and descents complicate landing points. Sloping fairways create above- and below-feet lies. Medium greens become quick and wind-exposed. Burns and bunkers do not always force carries, but they control placement areas. An offline ball often finds a slope that magnifies the error.

Peebles is a members’ club close to the town centre with clubhouse, dining, professional shop, practice and visitor booking. Its position makes a Cardrona or Borders double easy. The walk is physical without being mountainous, and views reward the climbs. Strong community identity and amateur history remain visible.

Play it to experience Harry Colt on valley hills rather than a flat estate. Peebles proves that 6,138 yards are sufficient when slope, wind and angles alter every approach.
