Main Course

North Foreland Golf Club’s Main Course occupies chalk cliffs at Kingsgate between Margate and Ramsgate on the north-east Kent coast. The layout combines clifftop golf, links influence and exposed downland, with broad English Channel views and the North Foreland lighthouse as a defining landmark. Chalk geology and maritime exposure give the course a character quite different from the classic sandy links farther south in Kent.

North Foreland Golf Club was founded in 1903. The modern architectural history took shape in 1913 when Herbert Fowler and Tom Simpson redesigned and extended the course to eighteen holes. The pair returned during the 1920s to refine their work. The club entered a celebrated period under the influence of Lord Northcliffe, the newspaper proprietor who owned neighbouring land and played an important role in expanding the golfing facilities and profile of the property.

The Main Course is an eighteen-hole championship layout. Fowler and Simpson used slopes, sea views and carefully placed bunkering to create repeated changes of angle. It is better understood as a clifftop/downland hybrid with links characteristics than as a traditional dune links. More recent work by Martin Hawtree and extensive bunker restoration has aimed to recover strategic definition while respecting the historic structure of the original routing.

North Foreland also has an important place in wider British golf history. Abe Mitchell, one of the leading English professionals of the inter-war period and the figure represented on the Ryder Cup trophy lid, worked at the club. Lord Northcliffe also created an eighteen-hole miniature approach-and-putting course, regarded as one of the earliest large par-three courses in Britain and the ancestor of today’s Northcliffe Course.

The course lies on a high coastal plateau above the English Channel. North Foreland lighthouse is woven visually into the club landscape and acts as a recurring reference point. Chalk-based ground drains efficiently and helps support year-round play. Wind is the principal natural defence: strength and direction can change effective yardage dramatically, particularly on the most exposed holes close to the cliff edge and open parts of the plateau.

The club now offers the Main Course and Northcliffe Par 3 Course together with practice, academy, clubhouse and visitor facilities. North Foreland has been selected as a Final Qualifying venue for The Open Championship, underlining its competitive quality. Cliffs, lighthouse, architectural pedigree and coastal wind make it one of Kent’s distinctive seaside courses while keeping it clearly separate in character from the county’s famous dune links.
