North Berwick Golf Club

North Berwick is the natural laboratory from which golf architecture borrowed some of its most enduring ideas.

The West Links run directly along the south shore of the Firth of Forth, between the town of North Berwick and the open land to the west. The beach, rocks, Bass Rock island, stone walls, and public paths are constantly part of the scenery. The course is narrow in its general footprint, but the terrain offers numerous undulations, hollows, and lateral angles. The proximity to the water exposes several holes to a highly variable wind.

Golf has been played on the West Links since the 17th century, and the North Berwick Golf Club was founded in 1832. The course gradually expanded westward in the 19th century, reaching eighteen holes by 1877. Its development was not the result of a single plan: the holes adapted to the available paths, walls, rocks, dunes, burns, and plots. This organic evolution explains the extraordinary originality of the layout and the global influence of several of its concepts.

North Berwick is a collection of architectural solutions that became models. The 13th, Pit, requires carrying an old stone wall to a sunken green. The 15th, Redan, features an elevated diagonal green that slopes from right to left behind a deep bunker; this principle has been replicated on hundreds of courses. The 16th, Gate, uses a green divided into two plateaus by a depression. These forms are not decorative: they impose a specific trajectory and angle.

The out-and-back layout follows the coast, with holes played in opposite directions and several visual intersections with promenades and the beach. The fairways may appear chaotic, but the slopes offer deflection lines and shortcuts. The final part becomes particularly inventive with Pit, Redan, and Gate. The greens present a rare diversity, from vast open surfaces to narrow or divided targets.

The experience combines a great historic links with a very lively seaside town. The clubhouse is located immediately next to the first tee, and the course shares its environment with walkers, the beach, and residences. Visitors have defined tee times according to days and seasons. This urban proximity removes any resort impression and reinforces the authentically public character of the landscape.

The Round selects North Berwick because no other course combines so many original architectural ideas in such a natural setting. It is at once accessible, unpredictable, historic, and profoundly influential.
