Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club

Newburgh Links is a par 72 of 6,423 yards or about 5,873 metres beside the River Ythan estuary on the Aberdeenshire coast. The present course combines historic Newburgh holes with nine opened in 1996 on Foveran Links, through firm fairways, low dunes, sea wind and rich wildlife.

The club was founded in 1888 by John Udny of Udny and local golfers. The first nine lay between Foveran Burn and the River Ythan. In 1912 McAndrew, professional at Cruden Bay, designed an eighteen-hole extension, but war and land pressures later reduced the course to twelve and then nine. That position lasted seventy-five years. Land bought in 1994 allowed Greens of Scotland and Glen Andrews to create a new nine, with the current course opening in April 1996. The property lies immediately beside the Ythan estuary, known for dunes, seabirds and seal colonies. Holes cross Newburgh and Foveran Links between beach, burn, wetland and sandy contours. The North Sea is not always visible, but wind and air govern play. Protected habitat requires careful vegetation management and creates a strong sense of isolation.

Two generations are combined. Historic holes have natural movement, compact lines and traditional scale. The newer nine is broader and built to form a coherent championship loop. Bunkers and slopes divide fairways, while greens remain true and running. The transition is sufficiently smooth that the age difference quickly disappears. The white card is 6,423 yards at par 72, with course rating 71. 7 and slope 127. Fairways are firm and greens fast. Wind can add substantial length and make par fives unreachable. Dunes are not enormous, but valleys, rough and natural areas punish misses. Estuary proximity makes conditions change within a day.

Newburgh offers a community-club atmosphere with booking, clubhouse, dining and easy access from Aberdeen. It sits within an exceptional route including Royal Aberdeen, Murcar, Trump International and Cruden Bay. The course is quieter and often more affordable without losing championship links character.

Play it for the resilience of a club repeatedly moving between nine and eighteen holes. Historic holes and the 1996 extension combine remarkably well.
