National Golf Links — Charles Blair Macdonald translating Britain’s great templates to Long Island

The course occupies Sebonac Neck, situated between Peconic Bay and Shinnecock Bay, across a landscape of inland dunes, open meadows, and hills.

The National Golf Links of America opened in 1911. Charles Blair Macdonald designed the course with Seth Raynor after having studied the finest British holes, which he reinterpreted rather than literally copied.

The holes draw inspiration from classic templates such as Redan, Alps, Eden, Road, and Sahara. The immense greens, diagonal angles, and geometric bunkers create an architectural style that is intellectual yet seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape.

The course offers considerable width but demands a profound understanding of the lines and green areas.

The club is exceptionally private and maintains a historical culture, featuring a clubhouse by Jarvis Hunt and a strong association with the Walker Cup.
