Nairn — a great Moray Firth out-and-back shaped by several generations of architects

The course runs along the Moray Firth to the west of the town of Nairn. The initial holes are very close to the water before the layout progresses into the dunes and then returns.

Founded in 1887, Nairn began with Andrew Simpson before Old Tom Morris extended the course westward and James Braid refined tees, bunkers and greens.

The architecture combines narrow fairways, gorse, pot bunkers, and fast greens. Recent interventions have strengthened the strategy while preserving the out-and-back identity.

The start of the course is immediately demanding, with the sea close at hand and little margin for error.

The historic club, coastal clubhouse and close connection with the town produce a complete links experience.

The Round selects it for the quality of its sequence and the way in which several architects have enriched the course without fragmenting it.

Founded in 1887; contributions from Andrew Simpson, Old Tom Morris, and James Braid; host of the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup.
