Murcar Links

Murcar Links is a championship par 71 of 6,462 yards or about 5,909 metres on rugged coastal dunes immediately north of Royal Aberdeen. Originally advised by Archie Simpson and refined by James Braid, it combines elevated tees, deep valleys, gorse, burns and repeated North Sea views.

The club was conceived at an Aberdeen meeting in December 1908 and formally established in 1909. Archie Simpson, professional and greenkeeper at neighbouring Royal Aberdeen, advised the first routing. James Braid made refinements in the 1930s. After periods under the Murcar Golf Club name, members restored Murcar Links in 2005, alongside clubhouse, practice and course improvements. Murcar occupies a dramatic coastal strip from Bridge of Don northward. Dunes rise and fall around natural valleys, making wind difficult to judge from some tees. Royal Aberdeen touches the property to the south, while the sea remains visible through many sequences. Gorse, burns and slopes create a more dramatic landscape than simple parallel fairways.

Simpson and Braid exploit verticality. Elevated tees provide broad views, but landing areas are divided by bunkers and level changes. Greens often sit in bowls or on dune shoulders. Every trajectory is required, supporting its reputation as a links for accomplished players. Modern Team Niblick work has remained sympathetic to the historic intent. From the back markers Murcar measures 6,462 yards at par 71 with demanding rating and slope. Turf is firm, while moving fairways create varied lies. Greens are fast and highly regarded; gorse often makes a sideways recovery necessary. Exposed holes become much longer in wind, whereas elevated tees produce considerable run in dry weather.
