Morfontaine — Tom Simpson’s intimate masterpiece among the heather and pines of the Oise

Morfontaine is located in the forest of Ermenonville, north of Paris. The sandy soil ensures rapid drainage, while the clearings, pines, birches, heather, and gentle undulations give the course an atmosphere akin to British heathlands.

The Morfontaine estate became a golfing venue in the early 20th century, driven by the Duke of Guiche. An initial private course was laid out before Tom Simpson was commissioned to create the Grand Parcours, which opened on October 9, 1927. Simpson utilized sandy terrain covered with pines, heather, and gorse, and the course has since been maintained with remarkable stylistic continuity.

Simpson designed fairways that appear natural but are organized around diagonals, irregular bunkers, and greens often open only on one side. The putting surfaces are integrated into the terrain, with subtle slopes that deflect approaches rather than abruptly stopping them.

The Grand Parcours does not rely on length. It alternates short, decision-making holes, more demanding par 4s, and greens whose surrounds require great precision. The quality of the terrain and the absence of urbanization enhance the sense of continuity.

Morfontaine remains a very discreet private club, where the experience is based on tranquility, walking, and tradition. Access is limited, and a visit typically depends on an invitation.

The Round selects it as one of the purest expressions of continental strategic golf: understated, unembellished, and featuring an architecture that reveals itself over time.
