Merion East — Hugh Wilson concentrating major architecture on limited ground

Merion is located in a suburb of Philadelphia on a relatively limited plot of land, traversed by streams, quarries, hills, and nearby residential areas.

The East Course opened in 1912. Hugh Wilson, a club member with no prior architectural experience, studied the great British courses before designing a compact layout that became one of the most influential in the United States.

Wilson employed a tight routing, iconic wicker basket bunkers, diagonal angles, and highly individualized greens. The site's constraints fostered inventiveness.

The course is short by modern standards, but the approaches, small greens, and flag positions maintain a major challenge.

The private historic club is deeply connected to American amateur golf and USGA championships.
