Hooge Graven Golfclub Ommen

Hooge Graven is a mature forest-and-heath course near Ommen, combining sandy soil, gentle elevation and a remarkably natural setting.

The project began in the late 1980s when local founders sought a golf course that could fit naturally into the Vechtdal landscape. The first nine holes opened in 1993 on land that included woodland, former drifting-sand areas and agricultural ground. Strong membership growth led to a second nine, completed in 2002. Eschauzier & Thate designed both phases with a restrained approach, using existing clearings, sandy contours and natural vegetation. The club later added a par-three course, practice facilities and a modern clubhouse. Over time Hooge Graven developed from a regional initiative into one of the most highly regarded courses in Overijssel. The course lies in the Vechtdal, a landscape of pine forest, heath, inland sand formations and gently rolling ground. Sandy soil provides excellent drainage and supports near year-round play. Fairways move between wooded corridors and open heathland, while three water features provide visual and strategic contrast. Wildlife is a visible part of the experience, with squirrels and woodland birds commonly seen. The topography is not dramatic, but subtle rises and hollows continually affect sightlines and club selection.

Eschauzier & Thate created a routing that follows the land rather than imposing artificial geometry. Direction changes ensure that wind affects each sequence differently. Bunkers are integrated into sandy landforms and greens are often slightly raised or defended by natural slopes. Width is available, but the preferred angle frequently lies close to heather or fairway bunkers. The 2002 extension was carefully matched to the older nine, producing a coherent 18-hole course rather than two visibly separate designs. At roughly 6,120 metres and par 72, Hooge Graven is demanding without being excessively long. Doglegs, tree lines and firm sandy surfaces reward controlled placement. Dry conditions encourage running approaches and the use of contours, while the three water hazards create occasional high-pressure decisions. The walking rhythm is excellent, and the course remains varied from the first tee to the final green.

Visitors frequently praise the welcoming atmosphere. Booking, practice facilities, a par-three course and clubhouse dining support a complete day. The club feels active and sporting rather than formal. Ommen and the wider Vechtdal also offer cycling, walking and accommodation, making the course suitable for a golf weekend.
