Hilversumsche — a multi-generation forest course restored around Harry Colt’s legacy

The course winds through the Kievitsdal forest, near Hilversum. A long beech-lined driveway leads to the clubhouse, and then the holes unfold among pines, deciduous trees, heather, and sandy soil.

Hilversumsche Golf Club was founded in 1910. Henry Burrows designed the first nine holes, which opened in the 1910s. Harry Colt added ten new holes on acquired land, and the eighteen-hole course became operational in 1928. Sir Guy Campbell notably modified the par 5s in the 1950s. Kyle Phillips subsequently led several renovations aimed at restoring Colt's original characteristics.

The diversity of architects remains coherent thanks to the character of the land. Colt contributed the diagonals and strategic bunkers, Campbell strengthened certain long holes, and Phillips restored greens and surrounds with a contemporary interpretation.

The course alternates between forested corridors and more open clearings. It is less dramatic than Royal Hague, but demands consistent precision and a wide variety of shot trajectories.

Hilversumsche boasts a rich history of hosting the Dutch Open and a clubhouse nestled within a century-old forest. Visitors are welcome to play on weekdays with prior booking.

The Round selects it for the successful architectural evolution spanning over a century, without losing its original forest identity.
