Het Rijk van Margraten

: a rolling course among orchards, vineyards and old woodland above Maastricht.

The course was developed in the early 2000s in the Limburg hills, where remains of the Roman Villa Backerbosch are preserved beneath the clubhouse. Alan Rijks used slopes, traditional orchards and woodland edges to create a destination course. The site offers views towards Maastricht and the surrounding plateau. Vineyards, orchards and old woodland create a distinctly Limburg character. Slopes influence every distance. Dutch Limburg occupies a unique place in the country’s golf geography. Its hills, valleys and varied soils create sightlines and ball flights that are impossible on northern polder courses. The region’s proximity to Belgium and Germany also gives its clubs a naturally cross-border membership and visitor culture.

The routing alternates open holes with woodland-protected sequences. Sloping fairways, bunkers and relatively compact greens demand position. The design follows the terrain rather than flattening it. The relationship between tee, landing area and green is therefore more important than apparent width. Architects use slopes to create uphill, downhill and uneven-lie shots without making every hole depend on raw length. The par-72 course is not excessively long, but climbs, descents and sloping lies change the challenge. The par-five ninth illustrates the need to control the ball on strongly angled ground.

The venue includes a golf school, restaurant, panoramic terrace and separate par-three short course. Proximity to Maastricht makes it a natural Round destination. Local hospitality—terraces, dining, accommodation and access to historic towns—extends the day beyond the final green.
