Royal Hague — Alison and Colt’s dramatic, physically demanding dune course

The course is situated in the dunes of Wassenaar, just a few kilometres from the North Sea. The terrain is exceptionally rugged for the Netherlands, featuring elevated tees, deep valleys, and fairways that rise and fall between the dunes.

The Koninklijke Haagsche Golf & Country Club is the oldest golf association in the Netherlands. After its former coastal course was lost during World War II, the club moved to the Wassenaar course, designed in 1938 by Harry Colt and Charles Hugh Alison for Daniël Wolf. Alison played the primary role in the current layout.

Alison employed a powerful scale: large bunkers, diagonal carries, greens perched on dune shoulders, and often intimidating lines. Colt brought more balance to the routing. The result is less visually subtle than De Pan but more spectacular.

The walk is demanding, and several holes require shots from very elevated or sunken positions. The wind can significantly amplify the differences in elevation.

Royal Hague remains a historic, prestigious, and private club, but it welcomes visitors under certain conditions. The clubhouse overlooks part of the course.

The Round selects it for its architectural power and unique dune landscape, which give Dutch golf an almost mountainous dimension.
