Gullane No. 1 — a hilltop championship links shaped by constantly changing wind

The course starts from the village, climbs Gullane Hill, then descends towards the coastal lands bordered by dunes, coastal walks, and the Aberlady nature reserve. Views over the Firth of Forth open up at the summit, while the wind changes direction almost at every hole.

Golf has been played on the links of Gullane for several centuries, with the club officially founded in 1882. The precise designer of No. 1 has been lost to time; the course gradually evolved and became an eighteen-hole layout in the 19th century.

The design utilizes the height of Gullane Hill, firm fairways, deep bunkers, and fast, often sloped greens. Its strength lies less in a signature effect than in the succession of precise positions required from the tee.

The 2nd hole climbs steeply and demands an exact tee shot to remain below the hole. Once the crest is crossed, the course alternates descents, crosswinds, and approaches to exposed greens.

Three courses, strong practice facilities and a heritage museum make Gullane a complete working golf club rather than a single-course destination.
