The Downs Course

The Downs is Golf At Goodwood’s great downland course, set above Goodwood House in the rolling hills of West Sussex. Fast-running fairways, undulating greens, deep valleys and dramatic elevation changes define the experience. Elevated tees open views across Sussex, towards Chichester and at times the Isle of Wight. The course has a powerful sporting character while remaining closely connected to the wider historic Goodwood Estate.

Golf at Goodwood dates to the early twentieth century, but the defining moment came in 1914 when Lord Bernard commissioned five-time Open champion James Braid to create a new course on the Downs. Braid produced one of his major downland layouts, and Goodwood notes that it was one of the courses he substantially created from the available land rather than merely revising an existing routing. Golf became one of the sporting pillars of the estate.

Goodwood currently lists the course from 5,505 to 7,134 yards, par 72. Firm running fairways, moving greens and doglegs express several principles associated with Braid. The estate highlights the seventh as a strong example of his dogleg work. From the back tees, length and elevation create a genuine championship test, while multiple teeing areas allow the course to serve different standards of golfer.

The Downs has been renovated by Tom Mackenzie with the aim of retaining the essential character of Braid’s concept while meeting the demands of the modern game. The work was evolutionary rather than replacement architecture, restoring clearer lines, risk-and-reward options and downland firmness. Fast fairways and undulating greens remain fundamental elements of the course rather than cosmetic presentation.

The course occupies high ground in the South Downs. Elevation is its dominant geographical feature: raised tees, valleys, side slopes and long horizons repeatedly alter both perception and effective distance. The landscape is more open than the Park Course below, so wind has a stronger influence. Views towards Chichester Cathedral, the Sussex countryside and the Isle of Wight give the round unusual visual depth.

Golf At Goodwood combines the Downs with the Park Course, The Copse short-game facility, a modern Academy and the wider hotel and sporting estate. The Downs is positioned as the more demanding of the two main eighteens. Leading players including Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Colin Montgomerie have played here.
