Golspie Golf Club

Golspie is a par 70 of 6,021 yards or about 5,506 metres, famous for crossing three landscape families in one round: North Sea links, heather heathland and a more wooded parkland finish. James Braid’s work, completed in 1926, gives the course its unity.

The Sutherland Golfing Society staged events in the area before the club was formally founded in 1889. The original nine soon earned recognition. The Duchess of Sutherland opened the eighteen-hole extension in 1905. Twenty years later James Braid was invited to refine the course, with his changes completed in 1926 and still defining its character. The club marks that architectural centenary with a festival in 2026. Golspie lies between the North Sea and Ben Bhraggie. Opening holes run beside the shore on low sandy ground, then the routing enters heather and pine before returning through fields and more open inland areas. Views shift between water, village, hills and the Duke of Sutherland monument. Wind changes with relief and vegetation.

Braid connected different environments without creating the feeling of three separate courses. Links holes use dunes, sea walls and running shots; the heathland section introduces doglegs, heather and framed targets; the parkland portion adds trees and elevation. The driveable Sahara, par-three Saucer and long finishing Drumbrae show the range. The official card is 6,021 yards at par 70. The first eight stay close to the sea, the central sequence crosses heather and the closing holes become more inland. Short par fours sit beside the 457-yard fifteenth and 443-yard eighteenth. Greens vary from dune-protected bowls to surfaces defended by bunkers, trees or plateaux.

Golspie remains a community club with straightforward hospitality, clubhouse, local catering, professional services and visitor booking. Its position on the Dornoch Firth circuit pairs naturally with Royal Dornoch, Brora and Tain. Pace, scenery and the absence of resort formality create a personal Scottish experience.

Play it for exceptional variety. Few courses move so naturally from links to heathland and parkland while retaining a coherent architectural signature.
