Wouwse Plantage — two generations of architecture unified in a wooded West Brabant landscape
Geography & setting
The club is located near Bergen op Zoom, in a landscape of woods, sand, clearings, and former agricultural land. Mature trees frame many holes without completely closing off the lines of play.
History
The course originated in the 1970s with a first loop designed by Frank Pennink. A second nine-hole loop was added in the late 1980s by Paul Rolin. From 2003 onwards, Ken Moodie and forestry specialist John Nicholson led a program aimed at harmonizing the two halves of the course and improving its strategic quality.
Architecture
The Pennink section is more understated, natural, and focused on angles. Rolin's holes introduce more undulation and contrast. Moodie's work sought to unite the styles through improved bunker visibility, more open tree management, and more consistent green areas.
The course in detail
The course is pleasant to walk, varied, and more strategic than it appears. Tee shots often require choosing a side of the fairway to open up the approach.
Club experience
Wouwse Plantage is a well-established members' club, with a modern clubhouse, a regional atmosphere, and visitor access under certain conditions.
Highlights
Frank Pennink's first loop in the 1970s; Paul Rolin's second loop in the late 1980s; renovation program by Ken Moodie in 2006-2007.
