At a glance
: a striking nine-hole course built on a mound above the Noordoostpolder.
History
Golfclub Emmeloord opened its present course in 2009. Gerard Jol worked with an unusual site: a large artificial mound rising about seventeen to eighteen metres above the polder. Six holes sit on the higher ground and three at its base. The course is a nine-hole loop, but alternative tees create a differentiated second circuit and a full par-74 round. A separate par-three course complements the main layout. Strong volunteer involvement has helped establish Emmeloord as a hidden gem of the Noordoostpolder. The course overlooks one of the flattest landscapes in the Netherlands. This contrast is its defining feature. From the high points, views extend across the geometric fields and horizons of the Noordoostpolder. The mound creates slopes, exposed wind and elevation changes that are rare in Flevoland. The terrain has an inland links-like appearance, although it is not an ancient coastal links.
Architecture
Gerard Jol uses elevated tees, sloping fairways and greens seen from changing angles. Holes on the summit are highly exposed, while lower holes use more water and planting. Alternative tees change distance and direction on the second circuit. The result offers much more variety than a conventional nine-hole course. Played twice, it creates a par-74 round. Elevation changes significantly affect club selection. Wind can make the summit holes very demanding. Sloping lies and unpredictable bounces require adaptation. Walking is possible, but the course is more physical than most polder layouts.
Club experience
The club has a warm volunteer-driven atmosphere. The course offers unusual views across the province and real architectural interest. A separate par-three course and practice facilities support beginners. For The Round, Emmeloord provides an original stop on the route toward Friesland or the northern Netherlands. Opened in 2009; designed by Gerard Jol; nine holes with alternative tees; full par-74 round; six holes on a mound rising about 17–18 metres; separate par-three course.
