Broekpolder — Frank Pennink turning flat polder into a long strategic course near Rotterdam

The course is located in the Vlaardingen polder, in the heart of Midden-Delfland. Open fairways, wooded areas, reeds, ditches, and water features compose a low-lying landscape highly exposed to wind.

Golfclub Broekpolder is the successor to the Rotterdamsche Golfclub, founded in 1932. The search for a true eighteen-hole course led to the creation of the new club in Vlaardingen. Construction began in 1979, the club was founded in 1981, and Frank Pennink’s course progressively opened. Gerard Jol and later Frank Pont then made modifications.

Pennink utilized length, doglegs, water, and bunkers to add strategic relief to an initially flat site. Modern renovations have enhanced the run-offs and the clarity of the green surrounds.

The course is long, pleasant to walk, and more open than a heathland. The difficulty varies greatly with the wind and the firmness of the ground.

Broekpolder is a large members' club near Rotterdam, known for its traditional absence of reserved tee times for members and its vibrant sporting life.

The Round selects it for the way Pennink created a true championship test from a polder landscape with no natural elevation.
