Seignosse — Robert von Hagge’s dramatic course through Landes pines and rolling ground

The course is situated between the Atlantic Ocean, Hossegor, and the Landes forest. Centuries-old maritime pines frame winding fairways that descend into valleys before rising towards plateaus. The sea air, sandy soil, and significant elevation changes distinctly differentiate Seignosse from flatter coastal courses.

Opened in 1989, the Seignosse Golf Course was designed by American Robert von Hagge, in collaboration with local architect Pierre Thévenin. The project capitalized on a much hillier terrain than the usual perception of the Landes forest. It quickly established itself as one of the most recognizable modern courses in southwestern France.

Von Hagge employed theatrical lines, elevated tees, pronounced doglegs, large multi-tiered greens, and water hazards strategically placed in decision-making areas. Despite its dramatic appearance, the course often provides multiple ways to reach the target.

The holes constantly change direction and elevation. The 11th, a long par 5 overlooking a valley with water on the right, is its visual signature. The course also features a par 6 measuring 666 meters from the back tees, a rarity in France.

Seignosse combines a high-caliber course with a well-equipped practice facility, dining options, and a more relaxed atmosphere than that of a traditional private club. Its proximity to Hossegor and the beaches makes it a natural destination for a golf and ocean getaway.

The Round selects it because it represents one of France's great modern signatures: spectacular without being superficial, and technical without becoming unplayable.
