Golf de Morfontaine

Vallière is Morfontaine’s original course, nine intimate Tom Simpson holes created in 1913 among pine, heather and rocky outcrops on the Gramont family estate.

Armand de Gramont, twelfth Duc de Guiche, received permission in 1913 to create a course for friends on an old polo ground within Vallière park. He commissioned Tom Simpson, admiring his ability to reveal natural landscape. These nine holes founded Golf de Morfontaine. After the First World War the family circle gradually opened to outside members and prepared the later Grand Parcours. Vallière crosses an exceptional landscape of pine, heather, moss and sandstone. It feels preserved outside time. Holes are short but isolated, with subtle changes of texture and light. Sandy soil maintains firm bounce and recalls leading English heathlands.

Simpson composed two par fives, four par fours and three par threes. Every hole uses natural movement or a vegetation opening. Greens are small, often tilted and protected by irregular bunkers. Beauty and strategy are inseparable: preferred routes are visible but rarely safest. Official sources confirm nine holes and a par-36 structure. Length varies by tee and is not widely published by this highly private club; the Atlas uses an approximate 2,900-metre reference. The test relies on accuracy, strike quality, bounce reading and ground play.

Access to Morfontaine is strictly limited to members and guests, apart from invitation through certain competitions. Vallière should not be presented as a standard green-fee venue.
